The West Bund Wander Line: A Free Riverside Route Just Opened

A new way to read the Huangpu River

On 5 August, the West Bund Wander Line — a free pilot shuttle along Xuhui's riverside — began trial operation. It is the kind of quiet infrastructure that changes how a district feels: instead of piecing together metros and walks, you can now drift between museums, public art and the water on one looping route.

The West Bund is the less-famous, more contemplative cousin of the Bund. Where the Bund is spectacle, the West Bund is curatorial — long embankment promenades, a cluster of serious art museums, and enough riverside seating to make lingering the point.

What you will pass

The route threads through the West Bund art district, where major museums sit within a short stroll of one another and the embankment is lined with cafes and public sculpture. It is built for the unhurried — arrive mid-morning, let one museum absorb you, then wander the water before the next stop.

Because the shuttle is free and in pilot mode, frequencies are gentle rather than frequent. Treat it as a sampler, not a commute: ride one loop, get off where the light looks good, and walk the gaps.

Pair it with a cruise

The West Bund and the central Bund share the same river but read completely differently. A tidy plan is to spend the afternoon on the West Bund Wander Line, then cross to the central Bund for a Huangpu River night cruise — the same water, two moods, one evening.

Getting there and around

The West Bund is reachable by metro, and the pilot line handles the last riverside mile. Bring water and sun protection in August; much of the route is open embankment.
