Shanghai's Rooftop Music Season Is the Easiest Free Night Out on the Bund

A rooftop, the river, and a DJ

From now through 30 August, the fifth-floor rooftop at BFC (Bund Financial Center) on the south Bund becomes an open-air music venue every weekend. More than ten music labels and thirty-plus DJs rotate through the season, so no two weekends sound the same — one week is deep house, the next is laid-back city pop as the sun drops behind Lujiazui.

The draw is the setting as much as the music. You are standing above the water with the Oriental Pearl, the Shanghai Tower and the whole Pudong skyline lit up across the Huangpu. For an international visitor, it is a free, low-stress way to get that postcard view without buying a cocktail at a rooftop bar.

How to actually get in

Entry is free but not walk-up — you reserve a slot on BFC's official WeChat mini-program, and weekends fill up. Book the morning of, or a day ahead for a popular DJ. Arrive before sunset (around 18:30 in August) if you want a spot near the railing with an unobstructed skyline view; the light in the last hour before dark is the whole point.

The rooftop is outdoors, so it runs weather permitting. If a typhoon or heavy rain is forecast, check the mini-program before you set out — Shanghai's summer storms are brief but real, and an outdoor show will pause or move.

Make an evening of it

The rooftop sits at the southern end of the Bund, a short walk from both the waterfront promenade and the boutiques and restaurants inside BFC. A natural rhythm: arrive early, walk the Bund riverfront as the city lights up, claim your rooftop spot for the music, then drift down to the Bund International Market or a riverside restaurant afterward.
