From 20 September to 1 November 2026, the riverside district of Qiantan stages its annual autumn season — a measured, design-led answer to the city's louder festivals. Built around five threads of flowers, light, music, markets and neighbourhood life, it turns the Huangpu's western bend into a place to walk slowly rather than tick boxes.
The centrepiece is Qiantan Riverside Park, newly layered with flower fields of cosmos, pink muhly and asters that shift colour through the season. A 3.3-kilometre flower tram threads the waterfront, and two immersive floral installations by the Belgian designer Tomas De Bruyne — titled Lunar Realm and The Way of Design — lift flower art from decoration into something you step inside. For a visitor, the pleasure is in the unhurried pace: a long morning by the river, a terrace lunch, an afternoon that asks nothing of you.

Light, after dark
As the season settles in, the waterfront becomes one of the Pudong stages of the Shanghai International Light Festival. Building facades along the river pulse with projected colour, a bridge-link light show called Endless Bloom, Qiantan unfolds across the water, and an 800-metre pedestrian street — Qianjiatan Road — is reimagined as a woodland of light, with fourteen installations and nine arches. An award-winning piece, Hummingbird's Wing by the Austrian artist Georg Roehler, is among the works that reward a second pass.
The refined way to take it in is from above rather than within the crowd: a riverside suite terrace, or a quiet table at one of the waterfront restaurants, with the light drifting across the water as the evening cools. From 16 October to 1 November, the season's music thread takes over as JZ Festival pours into Qiantan for an extended riverside edition — seventeen days across three weekends, more than 140 performances from musicians in over twenty countries. Five-time Grammy winner Victor Wooten and the soul vocalist Tia Ray anchor the closing shows, and every outdoor concert and forum is open to the public without charge.
It is jazz as a shared, open-air occasion rather than a ticketed nightclub, and the format suits a relaxed visit: arrive late afternoon, settle on the grass or a riverside terrace as the light fades, and let the music carry the evening.
