The pet capital of Asia, for one week

For five days each August, Shanghai becomes the centre of the pet world. PET FAIR ASIA 2026 runs 19–23 August at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) and is, by floor area, the largest pet-industry exhibition on the planet — about 320,000 square metres, 2,600-plus exhibitors and an expected 530,000 visitors.

It is equally a trade fair and a public spectacle. Breeders, brands and buyers fill the halls by day; families, pet owners and the merely curious come for the events, the meet-and-greets and the sheer scale of it. If animals are your thing, there is simply no bigger show in Asia this year.

What's inside

Expect the full spectrum: food and nutrition, grooming and health, smart pet tech, and a relentless stream of new-product launches. The show leans into experiences too — a 'Pet Them, Ride the Waves' water world, pet beauty contests, a national cute-pet pageant and professional dog shows run across the public days.

For travellers, the appeal is the chance to see products and breeds months before they reach home markets, and to soak up a side of Chinese consumer culture that rarely makes the guidebooks. Even without a pet in tow, it is a vivid, slightly chaotic, very Shanghai kind of day.

Getting there & staying cool

SNIEC sits in Pudong, right above Longyang Road station — served by Metro Lines 2, 7 and 16 plus the Maglev. From the Bund or People's Square it is a straight Line 2 ride; from Hongqiao or the airport, Line 2 or the Maglev drops you at the door. Give yourself buffer time — the venue is enormous and the surrounding blocks fill up fast.

August in Shanghai is hot and humid, and the expo halls are a world of their own. Bring water, wear light clothes, and treat the trip as a half-day at minimum. The upside: you are already in Pudong, so the city's most futuristic district is right next door.

Make a Pudong day of it

Since you are already in Pudong for the expo, extend the trip into the district's modern, future-facing side — the Lujiazui towers, the riverside parks and the planning exhibitions that explain how this farmland became a skyline in a generation. It is the most efficient way to turn a pet-show errand into a proper Shanghai day.

Travelling as a family? Shanghai Disneyland and the water towns beyond the city make easy next stops, and both are well within day-trip range. However you build it, Pet Fair Asia is the kind of event that turns a routine August visit into something you will actually talk about later.
