Shanghai in August is a city that hands you an excuse to stay inside: roughly 193 exhibitions are on across town this summer, most of them free and air-conditioned. When the thermometer pushes toward 38°C, the museums are not a backup plan — they are the plan.

The two flagship museums set the tone. Shanghai Museum East (上海博物馆东馆) in Pudong is the spacious, modern home for the bronze, ceramic, calligraphy and painting collections, while the original Shanghai Museum at People's Square remains the landmark for a first visit. Both are free but require advance reservation.

The August calendar worth a trip

Shanghai Book Fair (上海书展, 12–18 Aug) runs at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre and Shanghai Book City, with AI book recommendations, AI-generated video and robot reading helpers — daytime tickets are about ¥10. Pet Fair Asia (19–23 Aug) at the New International Expo Centre is enormous (2,600+ exhibitors) if animals are your thing.

Make a day of it

Museums in Shanghai are rarely isolated. The China Art Museum sits in the Expo-area riverside park; Shanghai Museum East is a short hop from Lujiazui's towers; the Book Fair's Jing'an venue is walking distance from Nanjing Road. Pair a morning gallery with a lazy lunch and an afternoon of air-conditioned shopping, and the heat disappears from the equation.
