Johnny Depp's 'Fringe Figures' Just Opened in Shanghai — A Celebrity Art Show on the Pudong Riverside

For three decades Johnny Depp was one of the most recognised faces on screen. In Shanghai this summer he arrives in a different guise: as the artist behind 'Fringe Figures' (边缘形象), his first major solo exhibition in China, opening 15 August 2026 at the Modern Art Museum (艺仓美术馆).

The show steps away from the actor everyone knows and presents the visual work Depp has accumulated for decades — intimate, personal, often raw. It is less a celebrity sideshow than a chance to see how a restless creative mind works when the camera is off. For visitors who only know him from Pirates of the Caribbean, it is a genuinely surprising hour.

The venue is half the appeal

The Modern Art Museum sits on the Pudong riverside, converted from a 1920s coal bunker of the old Yangjiadu wharf — raw industrial concrete softened by floor-to-ceiling windows onto the Huangpu. It is a short walk or one metro stop from Lujiazui, which makes it an easy add-on to a Pudong skyline day rather than a detour.

Come for the Depp, stay for the river. The rooftop and riverside promenade look straight across to the Bund's lit-up facades, and the late-afternoon light here is some of the best in the city. Time your visit for the golden hour and you get two exhibitions for the price of one.

Practicalities: dates, tickets, getting there

The exhibition runs 15 August to 13 December 2026, so there is no rush — but the opening weeks will be the busiest. Tickets are sold per session; book online in advance, as walk-up slots can sell out on weekends.

By metro, take Line 4 to Tangqiao (塘桥) and walk a few minutes, or walk roughly 20 minutes south along the river from Lujiazui. If you are already doing the Pudong towers, it slots in naturally. The museum is fully air-conditioned, which alone makes it worth considering on a 35°C Shanghai afternoon.

Make a Pudong day of it

A Depp exhibition is the perfect excuse to finally do the Pudong side properly. Ten minutes north is Lujiazui — the cluster of supertall towers, riverfront parks and some of the city's best sky-high dining. Spend the morning among the artworks, then drift up to the observation decks for the contrast of old wharf and new Shanghai in a single afternoon.

Go on a weekday morning if you can — the rooms are calmer and you can actually stand close to the work. Then walk the riverside path toward Lujiazui and catch the sunset; the Bund lights flicking on across the water is the kind of Shanghai moment that needs no caption.

If the Depp show sparks an interest in the city's art scene, the West Bund and the Former French Concession hold a dozen more galleries within easy reach — but for one self-contained, air-conditioned, photo-friendly afternoon, the Modern Art Museum is hard to beat.
