Shanghai's canals have opened a market

Most of Shanghai's famous water towns sit an hour or two beyond the city limits. Panlong (蟠龙), on the western edge of town, keeps the idea close to home: a thousand-year-old canal settlement that has been gently brought back to life as a walkable, car-free district of stone bridges, slow waterways and small shops. And for a few weekends in late summer, those waterways do something unexpected — they turn into a market.

The Panlong Water Market (蟠龙水市) runs from 28 August to 13 September, on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, roughly 11:00 to 21:30. Entry is free. There is no ticket, no fence and no hurry. You simply arrive, drift along the canals and see what the boats have brought that day.

At the granary dock (粮仓码头) in the heart of Panlong Xintiandi (蟠龙天地), the small sculling boats (摇橹船) that usually ferry visitors become floating stalls. Vendors pole gently up to the stone edge with honey peaches from the surrounding orchards, cut lotus and lotus seed pods, and a steady stream of guofeng (国风) crafts — paper, textiles and small keepsakes made in the national style. It is part farmers' market, part riverside craft fair, and entirely unhurried.

Because the boats move slowly and the canals are narrow, the scene stays intimate. You are never more than an arm's reach from the water, and the reflections of the old rooflines on the surface do half the work of the photography for you. Panlong Xintiandi sits in Qingpu district in the west of the city. The simplest public route is Metro Line 17 to Panlong Road (蟠龙路), a short walk from the canal district. From the centre of town it is a comfortable ride out — far enough to feel like an excursion, close enough to be back for dinner.

If a single water market leaves you wanting the full version, the classic canal town of Zhujiajiao (朱家角) is nearby, and a guided day there pairs naturally with this corner of the west. Hand the logistics to someone else and you get the stone bridges, the boat ride and an authentic water-town lunch without a thought about trains or timings.
