Huangpu's New Digital City Roam Turns the Bund, Yu Garden and Nanjing Road into One Walk

One walk, three Shanghais

Huangpu's 'Power Pop' digital roam, running through 15 August, links seven spots — Yu Garden, Chen Yi Square on the Bund, Nanjing Road, the Great World, and a few riverfront service points — into one connected walking route. The idea is simple: instead of three separate trips, you follow a single thread from the old town's lanes to the riverfront to the city's busiest shopping street.

Each point has its own themed decor and a digital stamp you collect in a mini-program. Finish the set and you unlock small prizes and online draws. It is aimed at families and younger visitors, but the route itself is a genuinely good way for a first-timer to see the core of Shanghai on foot without a plan.

How the digital part works

There is no paper map. At any stop you scan a code to open the mini-program, which shows the full electronic map and lets you 'check in' to collect a stamp. The program also has an AR photo feature — you can pose with the Bund or Nanjing Road as a virtual backdrop and generate a shareable clip in seconds.

It is deliberately lightweight: no app to install, no ticket to buy for the route itself. The stops are all public spaces, so you can join the roam at any point and just do the section nearest you. Go on a weekday morning if you want the photos without the crowds.

Where it actually takes you

The route is a highlight reel of central Shanghai. Yu Garden and its bazaar are the old-town anchor — teahouses, snack streets and the classical garden itself. Chen Yi Square and the Bund promenade give you the river and the Pudong skyline. Nanjing Road closes the loop as the pedestrian shopping street, with the Great World nearby for a dose of vintage entertainment architecture.

Because the stops are close together, the whole thing is walkable in an afternoon with breaks. If you would rather not navigate it alone, a private guide can turn the same thread into a proper half-day with context at each stop.

The digital roam is a clever frame, but the real product is the walk itself — three very different Shanghais, a short stroll apart, free to join. Treat the stamps as a bonus, not the point. Go on a clear weekday, start at Yu Garden, end on the Bund at golden hour, and the route does the rest.
