The draw is West Lake (西湖), a UNESCO-listed landscape of causeways, pagodas and hills that has inspired Chinese poets for a thousand years. On a clear summer morning the lake is misty and quiet — the opposite of a Shanghai rush hour.

A day on the lake

A good Hangzhou day strings together a West Lake cruise, Jingci Temple (净慈寺) on the southern shore, and the Longjing (龙井) tea hills, where you can walk the terraces, watch a tea-picking demo and taste the famous green tea where it is grown. The lake's Broken Bridge and Leifeng Pagoda are the postcard stops.

Go on a guided day and the logistics vanish: rail both ways, a cruise, the temple, the tea mountain and lunch, with someone steering you past the tour-bus crowds. Do it independently and you will spend half the day on tickets and transfers.
