Shanghai by Bicycle: Where the City Rides Well

Shanghai is flat, and its best cycling is on the riverfront promenades, the concession's plane-tree streets and the country roads of the water towns. Autumn is the season it is genuinely pleasant.

A flat city with good edges

Shanghai is almost entirely flat, which makes it a better cycling city than its traffic suggests — provided you ride its edges rather than its centre. The roads that carry the city's through traffic are not pleasant to share. The promenades, the park loops and the country roads beyond the outer ring are excellent.

Autumn is when it works. The humidity has gone, the light is long, and the riverside paths that are punishing in August become the best seats in the city. It is a season for riding rather than for cycling, which is a different thing.

  • •Almost entirely flat — good bones for cycling
  • •Ride the edges: promenades, park loops, country roads
  • •Autumn humidity gone, light long
  • •A season for riding rather than cycling

Three routes worth the saddle

The riverfront is the obvious one: the promenade on either bank, taken end to end, with the facades or the towers the whole way. Flat, car-free for most of its length, and at its best in the hour before sunset. Start on the quieter bank and cross when the light turns.

The second is the former concession, where the plane-tree streets are narrow, shaded and slow, and the architecture rewards going no faster than a bike. The third is beyond the city: the flat roads around the water towns and the dyke roads of the islands, where there is almost no traffic and the season is at its most rural.

  • •Riverfront promenade, either bank, best before sunset
  • •Concession plane-tree streets — narrow, shaded, slow
  • •Water-town country roads and island dykes
  • •Flat and largely traffic-free on all three

Prefer the engine to the saddle: your private guide carries you along the same riverfront and into Lujiazui's towers, with the promenade stops made from the comfort of a private vehicle. All-inclusive private vehicle, guide, admissions and bottled water.

Practical notes

Bike-share is ubiquitous and works well for short hops; for a proper ride, a hotel or a dedicated operator can arrange something better maintained and properly fitted. Helmets are not universal, and the city's cycling etiquette is relaxed — ride predictably and expect the unexpected.

Do not attempt the central arterials. Ride the edges, use the promenades, and treat the bike as a way of seeing a neighbourhood rather than of crossing the city. For distance, the private car remains the faster and calmer answer.

  • •Bike-share works for short hops; arrange better bikes for real rides
  • •Relaxed etiquette — ride predictably
  • •Avoid the central arterials entirely
  • •Bike for neighbourhoods; car for distance

Frequently asked questions

Is Shanghai a good cycling city?

On its edges, yes — riverfront promenades, park loops and the flat country roads beyond the outer ring. The central traffic arteries are best avoided.

Which route should I start with?

The riverfront promenade, taken end to end in the hour before sunset. It is flat, largely car-free and shows both banks.

When is the best season for cycling?

Autumn. The humidity has gone and the light lasts, which makes the exposed riverside routes comfortable rather than punishing.
