What to Pack for a Shanghai Autumn
Late September to November is Shanghai's most comfortable season and its most changeable — mild days, cool evenings and the odd day of rain. Packed correctly, one small case covers the whole range.

A mild season with a wide range
Shanghai's autumn is the easiest season to dress for and the easiest to get wrong. Days run mild and often warm in the sun; evenings drop quickly once the light goes; and the season carries a handful of genuinely wet days. The range within a single day is wider than the range across the season.
The answer is layers rather than weight. Nothing heavy is needed until December, but nothing single-layer will see you through an evening on the water. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else in the case.

The short list
Two or three light layers — a shirt or blouse, a mid layer, and something with a collar for the evening. A packable shell for rain, which doubles as a windbreaker on the riverfront and in the water towns. One smarter outfit for dining rooms and evenings; Shanghai dresses well and most good rooms expect it.
Comfortable shoes you can walk several kilometres in, plus one pair that will do for a good dinner. A compact umbrella is worth carrying rather than relying on one. And leave room: the city's tailoring, tea and craft studios are difficult to leave empty-handed.

Travel light and let the day be handled: your private guide and vehicle carry you from the old city to the riverfront, so layers and shoes are all you need to think about. All-inclusive private vehicle, guide, admissions and bottled water.

Bring any regular medication with you rather than relying on local equivalents, and carry a copy of the prescription. Power is 220V with a mix of socket types, so a universal adapter is worth packing. Mobile payment is the default — set it up before you land, and carry a little cash as backup.
Finally, pack for the photographs. The season's light is the best of the Shanghai year, particularly in the last two hours before sunset, and it is worth having a camera that is easy to reach rather than buried in a bag.
- •Bring medication with prescriptions, not local substitutes
- •220V with mixed sockets — pack a universal adapter
- •Set up mobile payment before landing; carry some cash
- •Keep a camera reachable for the afternoon light
